Connie's Story

A Cypress Area Favorite

Connie’s Frozen Custard, a cherished dessert destination in Houston’s Cy-Fair community, was founded in April 2000, bringing a taste of the Midwest to Texas. (Learn more about the Midwest Legacy below)

Frozen custard, distinct from traditional ice cream due to its inclusion of processed egg yolk, offers a denser and creamier texture. Connie’s takes pride in crafting their frozen custard fresh daily, ensuring optimal flavor and consistency. Over the years, the shop has become renowned for its diverse menu, featuring sundaes like the J.B.’s Texas Turtle— vanilla custard topped with hot fudge, caramel sauce, roasted pecans, and cherries—as well as a variety of concretes, floats, and milkshakes.

In recent years, Connie’s Frozen Custard has garnered significant acclaim. In 2022, Yelp ranked it as the best ice cream shop in Texas, and in 2023, it was listed among the top 100 in the nation. Connie’s was named Best Ice Cream shop in Houston in 2025 and 2023. These accolades reflect the community’s enduring appreciation for the quality and dedication that Connie’s brings to its frozen custard offerings.

Beyond serving delectable desserts, Connie’s is committed to giving back to the community. The shop offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the Cy-Fair Independent School District, encouraging creativity and passion in promoting frozen custard. This initiative underscores Connie’s dedication not only to sweet treats but also to fostering local talent and education.

THE LEGACY OF CONNIE’S

When we bought Connie’s, we thought we were simply taking over a beloved local custard stand. Little did we know, we were stepping into one of the richest legacies in frozen custard history—one that traces back to the very roots of the industry and the original greats.

It all begins with Leon’s, a Milwaukee institution that opened in 1942. Just a few years later, in 1946, Leon discovered the Carvel custard machine and began serving up the smooth, creamy treat that would change everything. He wasn’t just selling custard—he was shaping the future of it. Leon sold Carvel machines and helped set the standard for what great custard should taste like.

Many of today’s biggest names—Culver’s and Andy’s Frozen Custard, to name a few—can trace their beginnings back to Leon’s. Leon and his wife even vacationed with Andy’s parents, and the original Andy’s location in Osage Beach (now a Randy’s) helped set the stage for the frozen custard empire they later built.

This isn’t just history to us—it’s personal. We still use a Leon’s machine, built in 1950, to serve our custard at Connie’s. And just recently, we had the chance to meet with Ronnie, Leon’s son, who we still buy machine parts from to this day. But it’s more than just the equipment—we proudly use Leon’s original custard recipe too. That’s right: the same recipe that influenced the best in the business is the same one we’re scooping daily right here at Connie’s- now over 80 years old (2025).

So what makes Connie’s the best? It’s the legacy in every batch, the care in every cone, and the fact that we’re not just inspired by the greats—we’re directly connected to them. From the invention of the concrete by Ted Drewes, to the explosion of custard culture led by Andy’s and Culver’s, Connie’s stands proudly in that lineage.

We may have inherited a shop—but what we really gained was a piece of frozen custard history. And we’re honored to keep that tradition alive, one scoop at a time.
